If your company runs SAP ECC, 2027 should already be in the plan. Here we summarize what SAP has announced and how to turn it into concrete decisions.
The key dates
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| End of 2027 | Mainstream maintenance ends for SAP ERP 6.0 in its latest enhancement packages (EHP 6 to 8). |
| 2028 to 2030 | Extended maintenance available at an additional cost on the maintenance base. |
| 2031 to 2033 | SAP ERP private edition transition option, with conditions: move to the private edition on SAP HANA before the end of 2030 and purchase additional services. |
Enhancement packages older than EHP 6 have different rules, so confirm the exact version of your system.
What changes if I don't migrate in time?
The system doesn't shut down. What changes is support: without maintenance you stop receiving fixes and legal updates from SAP, and in Mexico that includes tax localization changes. With extended maintenance you stay covered, but you pay more for a system that no longer evolves.
The three paths
- Conversion (brownfield): you keep your configuration and history and move to S/4HANA. It's usually the fastest path.
- New implementation (greenfield): you redesign processes from scratch on S/4HANA best practices.
- Selective approach: you migrate only some company codes, processes or years of history.
What to do in the next 90 days
- Technical inventory: ECC version, database, custom developments and interfaces.
- Data cleanup: duplicate or obsolete customers, suppliers and materials; old open items.
- Review of at-risk modules: for example SAP WM, which in S/4HANA is replaced by EWM or Stock Room Management, and the new fixed asset model.
- Path and budget decision with a phased plan.
